Unit II: Generating functions

Generating functions record a sequence of counting answers as the coefficients of one polynomial or formal power series. This unit begins with rook polynomials, where the stored coefficients have a visible purpose in inclusion–exclusion. It then develops ordinary and exponential generating functions as two encodings suited to different kinds of combinatorial constructions.
